2001 Women's European Championships (Germany)

How does it work?

The nations in both group play a single-round-robin with three points for a win and one for a draw. After the groups completion the winner of Group A plays the runner-up of Group B and the winner of Group B plays the runner-up of Group A in one-leg knockout semi-finals and a final.

Group A and Review

Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
Germany 3 3 0 0 11 1 9
Sweden 3 2 0 1 6 3 6
Russia 3 0 1 2 1 7 1
England 3 0 1 2 1 8 1

Germany swept away all the opposition and were qualified with one game left still to play. As expected Sweden also progressed to the semis in what was a pretty predictable group. Russia and England were the outsiders for the competition and they showed that by only collection points off each other.

Results

Germany 3 v 1 Sweden
England 1 v 1 Russia
Germany 5 v 0 Russia
England 0 v 4 Sweden
Russia 0 v 1 Sweden
England 0 v 3 Germany

Group B and Review

Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
Denmark 3 2 0 1 6 5 6
Norway 3 1 1 1 4 2 4
Italy 3 1 1 1 3 4 4
France 3 1 0 2 5 7 3

Group B was a little closer with all four teams winning at least one game. Denmark recovered from a poor start to win the table. Norway qualified as expected but the manner of qualification was tighter than predicted only leading Italy by goal difference. France came last despite scoring 5 goals.

Results

Italy 2 v 1 Denmark
Norway 3 v 0 France
France 3 v 4 Denmark
Italy 1 v 1 Norway
France 2 v 0 Italy
Denmark 1 v 0 Norway

Semi-Final Results

Germany 1 v 0 Norway
Sweden 1 v 0 Denmark
All four semi-finalist were from similar parts of the continent demonstrating where Europe's heavy weights lie. Both matches were tight 1-0 affairs that saw Germany and Sweden win to end hopes of an all Scandinavian final.

Final

Germany 1 v 0 Sweden
The final match of the tournament was a repeat of the opening match. This is unusual however some did predict that this would happen. As for the match itself, well the result was the same as the first game too. Germany have been worthy winners throughout, winning every game.
