2000 European Championships (Belgium & Netherlands)

How does it work?

The Netherlands and Belgium qualified as co-host but the other fourteen nations had to come through two years of qualification just to get this far. All sixteen teams were drawn into four groups of four who played a single round-robin and first and second progress. There are then single-leg quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final with golden goal extra time and penalties the possible deciders.

Group A and Review

Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
Portugal 3 3 0 0 7 2 9
Romania 3 1 1 1 4 4 4
England 3 1 0 2 5 6 3
Germany 3 0 1 2 1 5 1
Portugal were not fancied in this group but they silenced the critics with three strait wins including coming back from two goals down to England and scoring in the last minute against Romania, who they had already played twice in qualifying. The Romanians themselves came second and made it to the quarters. England and Germany did little in this tournament except embarrass themselves, neither manager lasted long after.
Germany 1 v 1 Romania
Portugal 3 v 2 England
Romania 0 v 1 Portugal
England 1 v 0 Germany
England 2 v 3 Romania
Portugal 3 v 0 Germany

Group B and Review

Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
Italy 3 3 0 0 6 2 9
Turkey 3 1 1 1 3 2 4
Belgium 3 1 0 2 2 5 3
Sweden 3 0 1 2 2 4 1
All of Italy's results were close but it was far simpler than it appears. In all three games they took the lead then sat comfortably waiting to counter attack, it worked like a treat. But the real story of Group B was Turkey's progression to the next round, a display of how much Turkish football has improved in such a small space of time. Co-host Belgium fell at the first hurdle to national disappointment and Sweden, who had performed well in qualifying came a sorry last.
Belgium 2 v 1 Sweden
Turkey 1 v 2 Italy
Italy 2 v 0 Belgium
Sweden 0 v 0 Turkey
Turkey 2 v 0 Belgium
Italy 2 v 1 Sweden

Group C and Review

Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
Netherlands 3 2 0 1 7 2 9
France 3 2 0 1 7 4 6
Czeck Republic 3 1 0 2 3 3 3
Denmark 3 0 0 3 0 8 0
France 3 v 0 Denmark
Netherlands 1 v 0 Czeck Republic
Czeck Republic 1 v 2 France
Denmark 0 v 3 Netherlands
Denmark 0 v 2 Czeck Republic
France 2 v 3 Netherlands

Group D and Review

Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
Spain 3 2 0 1 6 5 6
Yugoslavia 3 1 1 1 7 7 4
Norway 3 1 1 1 1 1 4
Slovenia 3 0 2 1 4 5 2
This was the group of come-backs, with Yugoslavia involved both times. In the battle of the Balkans the Yugoslavs drew after being 3-0 down and then conceded three late goals to the Spanish to loose the game. Norway only just missed out but had only scored one goal in the group, but only conceded one as well. Slovenia performed well in their first major tournament but failed to win a match.
Spain 0 v 1 Norway
Yugoslavia 3 v 3 Slovenia
Norway 0 v 1 Yugoslavia
Slovenia 1 v 2 Spain
Yugoslavia 3 v 4 Spain
Slovenia 0 v 0 Norway

Quater-Finals

The Dutch crushed the Yugoslavs 6-1 with a devastating display much to the home crowds delight. Raul missed a last minute penalty for Spain which allowed France to continue on their merry way. Portugal ended Turkeys dream with one goal in each half and Italy won in a match that saw Romania's Haji sent off on his last ever international appearance.
Portugal 2 v 0 Turkey
Italy 2 v 0 Romania
Spain 1 v 2 France
Netherlands 6 v 1 Yugoslavia

Semi-Finals

France ended Portugal's run in controversial fashion scoring a golden goal in extra time from the spot after Xavier was judged to have hand-balled, it was probably just the right decision. Penalties all so figured in the other semi-final with spot kicks the decider as Italy prevailed over the home hopefulls who also missed two spot kicks during the match itself. The Dutch manager was later caught on camera unsuccessfully trying to hold back tears.
France 2 v 1 Portugal
Italy 0 v 0 Netherlands
(Italy win 3-1 on pens)

Final

France equalised in the fourth minute of added time and then followed that up with golden goal winner from Trezeguet. France are unquestionably the best team in the world but you still need luck to win a tournament and they got a fair share during Euro 2000, but to a certain extent you make your own luck. A thought should be spared for Italy who came so close again, last time they met France they lost on penalties.
France 2 v 1 Italy
(Golden Goal)
